Vincent Girardin (375ml), 2015, Meursault « Les Narvaux »

White, Old World, Chardonnay from Burgundy

Wine with great mineral character; lemony and buttery; full of complexity. Incredible length and long ageing potential. Ideal with seafood and rich creamy dishes.

Why we recommend this wine
Mersault is great - just our type of wine (see our trip notes here) and this is a classic made by a well respected winemaker; expensive but worth it!

The wine
The vineyard Les Narvaux is in the village of Meursault, above the the Premier Cru parcel “Les Genevrières”. Although a ‘village level’ wine it is considered a wine with premier cru quality.
The grapes from 55 years old vines are harvested by hand and sorted when picking the grapes. They are then lightly pressed in a pneumatic press at a low pressure to get a slow extraction. After a gentle racking of the must, the wine is put in French oak casks of 228 liters (15% of new oak) for both of alcoholic and malolactic fermentations with wild yeasts for 16 to 18 months. During this time, we did no stirring of the lees in the barrels. A month before the bottling, the wine from the different barrels is put into a stainless steel tank to make the blend. The wine is finally fined and lightly filtered before bottling it according to the lunar calendar (“fruit” day for Meursault “Les Narvaux”).

The wine estate
In 1980, at the age of 19, Vincent Girardin, the son of a family of winegrowers based in Santenay since the 17th century, decided to strike out on his own, and began producing wine from two hectares of vines that he had inherited from his parents.

To cope with the growing demand for his wines, he developed an approach that was new in Burgundy: he purchased grapes from producers who shared the same philosophy and the same high standards. In the early 2000s Eric Germain was appointed winemaker and a profound change began to take place; They decided to concentrate on the essence of the wines: the expression of the great terroirs of Burgundy. A new purity of style was born, which has now been acknowledged by all winemakers.

In 2012 Girardin sold his operation to a long-standing partner who, naturally, decided to continue with the small team of 9 people, who had been faithful to the Maison for many years. Eric Germain continues to uphold the style of the wines.

All the Girardin wines are made from vines managed according to sustainable agriculture principles.
