St Gayan (375ml), 2013, Gigondas

Red, Old World, Grenache blend from the Southern Rhone, France

Bursting with typical, slightly sweet Grenache fruit and serious tannins this will go excellently with grilled meats and hard cheeses.

Why we recommend this wine
When we visited the Southern Rhone a while back (see our trip report here) it was not with the expectation of finding any Grenache that we liked as we have always thought it a bit too sweet to our tastes. But, as usually happens, we found that excellent wine makers make excellent wines that we really enjoy. And Dm Saint Gayan is an excellent wine maker!

The wine
55 year-old vines - grenache 75%, syrah 15%, mourvèdre 5% made in a traditional, long fermentation with 12 months in oak barrels. A powerful, deeply-coloured wine which rewards patient cellaring. After 5 years, it starts drinking very well, and improves for 10 or more years depending of the vintage. Being a half bottle the aging process is accelerated so this is perfect now.

The wine estate
Located on the site of an ancient Roman villa (at each plowing they find remnants, especially fragments of Tegula and Dolia (tiles and large jars)), Domaine Saint Gayan’s Goubert family have been growing grapes since 1709. Today the Domaine comprises 38 hectares, of which 35 hectares are in Appellation Contrôlée. They place a great deal of importance on the terroir, and prefer old vines, some of which are more than one hundred years old. These old vines have an incomparable balance, able to withstand climatic variations to give the best grapes year after year. The vines are not irrigated. The soils are worked in a traditional way, striving to respect nature in the best way possible.
