Quinta Do Noval (375ml), 2011, LBV Unfiltered Single Vineyard

Port, Late Bottled Vintage from Portugal

Lighter than a vintage port and full of dark fruit with a medium, fresh sweetness. Port and stilton is a traditional pairing, and very good this is too.

Why we recommend this wine
When we went to Portugal, Quinta do Noval was high on our list of wineries to visit in the Douro valley because of its growing reputation and we were impressed. It is not every year that a vintage is ‘declared’ for port; it has to be a very good year for growing the grapes and there have been a maximum of only 4 in any decade in the last century. 2011 was declared a vintage.

This wine
Treated exactly like a Vintage Port using only traditional grape varieties from the Quinta, trodden by foot and unfiltered. Its main difference is that it is aged for four, sometimes five years in wooden vats instead of the two years typical of Vintage Ports. Longer maturing in casks helps provide a smoother wine and gives it its very approachable style; ready to drink as soon as it is bottled. Not being filtered means that it may throw a sediment but has greater body. Definitely an LBV with a difference, with fine structured tannins, great freshness and purity of fruit. It is delicious to drink today, but will age beautifully.

The wine estate
Noval was acquired by Axa in 1993 and immediately began a programme to replant the entire estate. They also built a new bottling line and warehouse in Alijo, near to Pinhão which was completed in 1997. This project made Quinta do Noval the first of the traditional Port shippers to centralise all its activities in the Douro Valley rather than in Vila Nova de Gaia near Porto. www.quintadonoval.com

Food and wine
Apart from stilton and other blue cheeses it also goes well with goats’ milk cheeses. And then it is a great match for chocolate desserts such as a torte with raspberries.

Did you know?
In 1958 Quinta do Noval was the first house to launch a 'Late Bottled Vintage' Port, with its 1954 LBV; the creation of a whole new category of Port wine.
