Dark red with cherry and prune on the nose; plump, juicy and savoury cherry notes. Great with Italian meat dishes, stews and roast meat.

Why we recommend this wine
If you want a reasonably priced wine for pasta – a glass in the cooking and a glass as an accompaniment – this is it.

The wine
The Montepulciano grapes are hand harvested when ripe and fermented at controlled temperatures of 25-18C and maceration on the skins for one week. A portion of the wine is matured in oak for 3 months and the remainder in tank before bottling.

The wine estate
Founded in 1964 and located in the beautiful Marche region, Moncaro is one of the largest co-operatives in Italy with 1,100 members who cultivate a total of 1,700 hectares of vineyards., all of which are controlled using integrated ‘nurture nature’ farming methods. The co-operative has three separate wineries situated in the principal viticultural areas of the Marche. This allows master winemaker Giuliano d’Ignazi and world famous consultant oenologist Riccardo Cottarella, to create wines which retain the individual characteristics of each area.

Food and wine
Perfect with tagliatelle with meat sauce, lasagne, ravioli and tortellini and roast meats and stews.

Did you know?
Co-operative wineries used to be synonymous with poor quality, cheap wines because their members were paid on tonnage received by the winery. A lot of this wine was so bad it had to be turned into grape spirit. However, competition has forced many to change their habits and reward members for quality of grapes. These co-ops are now making good value wines that can be comparable with estate wines in quality.
