Leone de Castris (375ml), 2016, Salice Salentino DOC Riserva

Red, Old World, Negroamaro from Puglia, Italy

Smooth black fruits and sweet spices with a long finish. Ideal with roasts, tomato-based dishes and hard cheeses.

Why we recommend this wine
During our travels to Puglia this became our go-to wine suiting both lunch and dinner.

The wine
Salice Salentino was ‘invented’ over 50 years ago and is now a benchmark Puglian red wine. A blend of Negroamaro (90%); Malvasia Nera this wine spends 12 months in large oak barrels and then a while in the bottle. It is released two years after the harvest date when it gets the Riserva status. It won Gold at Mundus Vini and Robert Parker awarded 90+ points.

The wine estate
Leone de Castris is one of the top producers in Puglia and is the oldest winery in Puglia being established in 1665. Their large holdings are situated on lands with ancient vine growing and wine making tradition in Salento in Puglia. Salento is located on the “heel” of the boot of Italy. The Salento Peninsula gets more than its fair share of hot sunshine. Luckily the vineyards are well ventilated by the Mediterranean breezes that blow across the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Although the vineyard operations of Leone de Castris are not certified as organic they ‘nurture nature’.

Food and wine
Fruity with soft tannins and not over-powering means that this wine matches a large range of dishes; probably anything other than subtly flavoured fish.
