A rich oaky Californian chardonnay that goes perfectly with a farmhouse omelette filled with avocado, tomatoes, red onions etc.

Why we recommend this wine
Although we tend to go for the more restrained style of Chardonnay our recent trip to Napa and Sonoma (see our trip notes here) taught us that with certain rich foods the traditional Californian Chardonnay has its place.

The wine
Vintners Reserve is Kendal Jackson’s flagship range of wines and the Chardonnay is America's #1 selling Chardonnay for 25 years and counting.

The grapes are grown in California’s cool coastal vineyards. The blurb says Monterey County provides citrus and lime flavors; Santa Barbara County imparts mango and pineapple flavors; Mendocino County imparts green apple notes; Sonoma County adds ripe pear flavours.

The wine is crafted in small vineyard lots throughout the entire winemaking process. Whole cluster are pressed to retain the fresh fruit qualities without the bitterness from stems and seeds. Fermented and aged in French and American oak barrels for richness, toastiness and complexity. Sur lie aging with monthly battonage (lees stirring) gives the signature velvety texture and creamy flavor.

The wine estate
Founded in the early 80’s today they farm over 5000 acres of vineyards. That is some growth from the original 80 acre pear and walnut orchard! So, although a large business, Kendal Jackson is family-owned and has won numerous awards for its wines and eco-friendly practices. They are a winner of the Green Medal Award which was developed to recognise California vineyards and wineries excelling in sustainability: environmentally sound, socially equitable, and economically viable.
