Jean Bousquet (375ml), 2019, Malbec

Red, New World, Malbec from Argentina

Ripe black fruits and soft tannins. Goes well roast root vegetables, grilled meats and hard cheeses.

Why we recommend this wine
When we visited Mendoza a few years back (see here) we really got to love the way they made their Malbecs and so hunted high and low for a good half bottle of wine; this one suits our book perfectly.

The wine
The wine is an opaque violet, almost black color. It has intense rich aromas of blackberry fruit with spicy black pepper notes and blackcurrant. On the palate blackberry, ripe plum and chocolate flavors with a very soft, supple mouthfeel. Excellent structure and length. Great fruit; one can almost smell the heat and dust of Mendoza.
Bousquet farm organically believing that their organic grapes offer a quality of fruit and vibrancy of taste that is unparalleled in the world of ordinary wines. Organic vines tend to produce lower yields of greater concentration and flavor than the chemically fed ones, allowing their unique flavors to shine through. This is a vegan wine. In addition it has, because of the altitude at which it is grown, a high procyanidin content (the polyphenol that is responsible for reducing the incidence of coronary heart disease) - see also Madiran.

The wine estate
The Bousquet Family, who hail from the southern French city of Carcassonne, have a long history and prestigious wine making tradition. In the constant struggle to produce wines of a superior quality, Jean Bousquet was determined to find the best place to continue the family’s decades long tradition.
In 1998, after buying a parcel of land, he moved from France to the foothills of The Andes. The vineyard is located in Tupungato, Uco Valley, Mendoza at an altitude of 1200 meters (4,000 feet) above the sea level, making it one of the higher altitude vineyards of Mendoza and the world. The vineyards are blessed with cool nights and a near constant cool breeze, the idyllic conditions for ripe grapes and excellent wines.

Food and wine
With the fruit and tannins this pairs well with caramelized vegetables and charred meats, hard cheeses and dark chocolate. Refer also to our food and wine pairing guide, click here

Did you know?
Malbec grapes originated in Cahoors where it made heavy, tannic wines. Mendoza’s lighter, fruitier style have made the French change to a more approachable style, for example see here
