Harmand-Geoffroy (375ml), 2012, Gevrey Chambertin

Red, Old World, Pinot Noir from Burgundy, France

Past wine – out of stock. See here instead

Fine, elegant with restrained fruit and tannins; ideal for drinking now. Ideal for the subtly flavoured dishes; fish, chicken or lean meats.

Gérard Harmand and his son Philippe run this 9 hectare family farm. The cultivation method is very traditional and also eco-friendly:they do not use chemical fertilizers or insecticides, preferring instead to let the plant play its role in self-defence.

Harmand-Geoffroy may not be well know but, in an area where the experts say "follow the winemaker not the area", they get really good reviews as illustrated below. This wine comes from the 2012 vintage which is described as varying from great to excellent; a concentrated yet fresh vintage.  (Last tasted by us in January 2015 - drinking wonderfully; light ruby colour, great Burgundy perfume, soft sensuous fruit)

"Gerard is one of Gevrey’s stars, producing a splendid range of wines…The Harmand’s touch is clearly masterly. Their wines are all too attractive young, but age well. A fine, confident domaine.” Remington Norman and Charles Taylor MW, The Great Domaine’s of Burgundy.

“For those readers who are not familiar with the Harmand-Geoffroy wines, they are understated fruit-forward wines but with fine purity of expression and limited to moderate oak” Allen Meadows,, Issue 41.

Coq au Vin is the traditional Burgundian dish that goes with Pinot Noir - a bottle of Chambertin for the pot and one for the table, is more or less how Hugh Johnson puts it.  However at the price most Burgundy goes for this is a bit expensive so look for a good Bourgogne Rouge.  Having said that, most chefs would argue that the better the wine, the better the dish.

This is a delicious wine. Medium bodied & silky. Lovely red berry fruits with a lingering finish. Excellent value.
