Finca Sophenia (375ml), 2011, Altosur Malbec

Red, New World, Malbec from Argentina

Past wine – out of stock

Roberto Luka founded Finca SOPHENIA in 1997, together with Gustavo Benvenuto. He named the estate after the names of their daughters: Sophia and Eugenia.

Their vineyards are located on the slopes of the Andes mountains in the famous district of Tupungato, Mendoza, where some of the best quality wines are made. At an elevation of 1200 meters (4000 feet) the terroir benefits from the cooler climate, abundant sun, and sharp contrast between day and night temperature.

halfwine visited this part of Argentina in 2011 - see our trip notes here.

The winemaker describes the wine as "Attractive red color with violet hues. Aromas of intense ripe fruit: cherries, blackberries, blueberries, and fresh plums, combined with spicy and floral hints. In the mouth the sweet and round tannins increase its fruit sensation and balance. Wine of good intensity, concentration and long after taste." Robert Parker awarder the 2012 89 points which is pretty good for a second wine.  Last tasted by us in March 2014.
