Ferraton Père & Fils (375ml), 2016, Crozes-Hermitage «La Matinière»

Red, Old World, Syrah from the Northern Rhone, France

Past wine – out of stock. See here instead

Medium-bodied with plenty of red fruits and fine tannins. Ideal to accompany grilled or roast lamb

Why we recommend this wine
We love Syrah finding it to be between Bordeaux and Burgundy in heaviness and time to ideal drinking age but generally below both in terms of price at the quality end of the range. This wine is a good example of this.

The wine
This 100% Syrah undergoes maceration for 20 days before temperature controlled vinification and then the wine is partly matured in oak barrels for a year before bottling. The wine maker describes this wine as having an intense cherry red colour with aromas of small red fruits and black currents; the taste is reminiscent of cherries and raspberries. We agree

The wine estate
Ferraton is a family owned winery with vineyards in the prime areas around Tain l'Hermitage in the Northern Rhone. Added to this is a small, high-quality negociant business which covers all the northern Rhône appellations and a few from the south as well. In 1998 they signed a joint venture with Chapoutier giving them access to Chapoutier biodynamic farming and winemaking expertise with positive results. They have used biodynamic methods for almost twenty years and are a certified producer.

Food and wine
With good fruit, soft tannins and being medium bodied it is ideal with lighter meats, game birds and the heavier fish. Refer also to our food and wine pairing guide, click here

Did you know?
Ferraton have their cellars right on the banks of the Rhone which, in years gone by, was very useful because wines were transported by barge to Paris.
