Domaine Masson-Blondelet (375ml), 2018, «Thauvenay» Sancerre Blanc

White, Old World, Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire, France

Flowers, especially honeysuckle, on the nose with the palate having lemoney citrus and minerality. Excellent as an aperitif or to accompany asparagus, crustaceans and oysters and goats cheese.

Why we recommend this wine
When we visited Masson-Blondelet many years ago we were impressed by their range of sauvignons and how well they expressed the difference in the soils in which the vines were grown. This sauvignon has impressed year after year.

The wine
This Sancerre from the village of Thauvenay is grown on complex chalky-Portlandian-flinty soil. It is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and spends some time on the lees before bottling. It is an excellent example of a Sancerre; aroma and palate. The winemaker suggests that you serve the wine chilled at 12°C.

The wine estate
Domaine Masson-Blondelet is run by the seventh generation of wine producers in the family. They produce elegant, very fine white wines using sustainable farming techniques (no fertiliser and free of herbicides and pesticides). They produce a handful of Pouilly Fumé including some that are oaked and this Sancerre and also several pinot noir reds.

Food and wine
A wine to drink throughout a meal; hors-d'oeuvres of asparagus, light pates or oysters; fish that you would serve with lemon and crustaceans; goats or other sharp cheeses; lemon-based desserts such as tarte au citron.

Did you know?
Winemakers strive to make their wines express their terroir which includes the soil in which the vines are grown. If you want to taste the impact of terroir then compare this Sancerre to their Pouilly Fumé - the only difference is the soil; the cultivar and wine making approach are exactly the same.

As with all Sancerre, [this] is 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The nose emits very soft, delicate peach aromas. Peaches can be picked up on the palate too along with some bitter lemon, grapefruit and minerals. The acidity levels are crisp and a wee bit green but it does have a lovely steely finish, due to stainless steel fermentation. This wine has the potential to age; the youthful acidity levels tell me that. They will begin to smooth out over time allowing the fruit to come more to the fore. All in all, a pleasant wine!
