Domaine de l'Espigouette (375ml) 2012 Cotes du Rhone

Red, Old World, Grenache based wine from the Rhone

The sweetness of Grenache is immediately apparent on the nose and in the mouth; full and luscious. Will go really well with any entrées that contain fruits and, especially, curries.

Why we recommend this wine
This is a well-made classic Côtes du Rhône; Grenache dominated but obtaining some complexity from the remaining varietals. Full of ripe red fruits with soft tannins; everything one would expect.

The wine
Made from old vines over 45 years old on average - 70% Grenache 10% Syrah 10% Mourvedre 5% Carignan 5% Cinsault The wine is vinified traditionally in concrete tanks and is matured in oak foudres for 6 months before being bottled. Designed to be drunk young to take advantage of its fruitiness.

The wine estate
Domaine de l'Espigouette has been owned by the same family for 4 generations. It is now run by Bernard Latour, his wife and two sons. The estate has vineyards located in the villages of Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Rasteau and in the general Côtes du Rhône area. All vineyards are farmed organically.

Food and wine
Whilst plain foods can usually be matched easily to complimentary wines, there are many dishes where fruit or spice ingredients pose considerable challenges for most wines. Grenache, with its inherent sweetness, is one of the few varietals that take them in their stride.

Did you know?
The Côtes du Rhône is one of the largest wine regions in the world with more than 5000 wine makers producing more than 400 million bottles of wine per year.
