Domaine Coursodon (375ml), 2015, St Joseph Rouge La Silice

Red, Old World, Syrah from the Northern Rhone, France

A well balanced ruby coloured wine with fine tannins, mature black berry nose and full of fruit. Excellent with game birds and venison.

Why we recommend this wine
We have always liked St Joseph Syrah as a mid-point between Burgundy and Bordeaux both in weight and the time taken to mature, and this is an excellent example. We came across Coursodon many years ago during our first visit to the Northern Rhone and were impressed with their wines. This is a typical St Joseph Syrah made by a small, family-owned winemaker with a ‘nurture nature’ approach – our ideal type of wine.

The wine
The vines for this wine are grown on steep granite slopes so mechanization not possible; all viticulture work and harvesting is done by hand. A first sorting of the grapes is done in the vineyard; a second sorting when arriving at the winery. 100 % of the vintage is destemmed. Maceration and fermentation are made in open vats during 18 days punching the cap twice a day. Aged in oak barrels for 15 months.

The wine estate
Coursodon produces only red and white Saint-Joseph from 16 hectares; 13.5 for the red wines (syrah vine exclusively) and 2.5 for the white wines (marsanne and roussanne vines).
Jerome Cousodon is the fifth generation of wine growers. He enjoys saying that: “It is the sum of small details that makes the difference”. If the Coursodon wines are almost impeccable today, this is owed to the concern for always doing the best.

Food and wine
Having a taste profile midway between Bordeaux and Burgundy it is ideal with less fatty meats and the more subtle hard cheeses.

Did you know?
Up until nineteen fifties Cousodon sold their wine in Paris, sending the barrels by rail to cafés in the capital. Then they took up a new challenge: to market his wine in bottles, making them be seen as a pioneers.
