Domaine Charton-Vachet (375ml), 2015, Bourgogne Pinot Noir cuvée des Henri

Red, Old World, Pinot Noir from Burgundy, France

Past wine – out of stock. See here instead

A full cherry nose, a beautiful lightish, see-through red colour, the taste of tart cherries and black currants. Goes well with hors d'oeuvres and subtly flavoured fish and white meat.

Why we recommend this wine
Good entry-level Bourgogne Rouge in half bottles are rare so we sample them at every opportunity. We discovered Didier’s wines at the London Wine Fair in 2015 and immediately bought the next vintage.

The wine
The grapes are grown in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in a clay-limestone soil, hand-picked and then made in old oak barrels. In the vineyard we use as few pesticides as possible (organic culture since 2015), ploughed soil (no herbicides) and in the winery we use natural yeasts, a little sulfur and a light filtration before bottling, nothing more. All in all an excellent example of what it is, an every-day drinking red burgundy.

The wine estate
A true small, family business. This 2014 "Cuvée Henri" was the first red wine of the Charton-Vachet estate. The vineyard in Nuits-St-Georges used to belong to Didier’s grandfather. When their father received it as a heritage in 2014, Didier (a new winemaker in the Montagny appellation) and his brother Jacques (who works in a big estate near Beaune) decided to make red wine again.
The name « cuvée des Henri » is dedicated to Henri Charton, their grandfather, who used to grow this Bourgogne Pinot Noir, and to Henri Vachet, Didier's wife's grandfather, who used to grow the vineyard in Montagny that Didier now grows.

Light, slightly tart with good acidity means lean and light food – ceps, fillet, chicken or turkey and tuna. Refer also to our food and wine pairing guide, click here
