Domaine Alain Michelot (375ml), 2015, Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes

Red, Old World, Pinot Noir from Burgundy, France

Complex flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant and earthiness, and a long, elegant flavoursome finish. Excellent with roast leg of lamb or duck breast and soft cheeses such as Époisses, Langres or Soumaintrain.

Why we recommend this wine
Burgundy ranges from very light to quite medium bodied.  This wine is in the medium bodied end and the old vines add to the intensity and complexity. An excellent Nuits-Saint-Georges from an excellent vintage

The wine
Powerful and strongly-built, this is the type of wine that gives the Côte de Nuits its noble reputation of a sturdy character. All the richness of vines at least 45 years of age, gives this powerful, aromatic Nuits-Saint-Georges a wonderful texture and complex flavours.

The wine estate
Located in the heart of Nuits-Saint-Georges, the Domaine Alain Michelot cultivates 8 Ha of vineyards over Nuits-Saints-Georges and Morey-Saint-Denis. The property dates back to the end of the 19th century around 1880. Four generations of winemakers have contributed to the reputation of this Domaine which has as its goals authenticity and quality. Alain, though still in charge, has handed the winemaking reins to his daughter Elodie, and the wines have gained in finesse and purity as a result.

Food and wine
Its normal partners would be any meat that is at once full-flavoured and fatty (roast lamb, rib steak, or breast of fattened duck), as the wine firmly coats and envelops its fibrous texture. It is also great with powerful, soft centred cheeses.

Did you know?
The term ‘Vieilles Vignes’ indicates that the wine comes from vines that are notably old. There is a general belief that older vines, when properly handled, will produce a better wine; and most times in our experience it does. However, there is no legal or general agreement on what old means.
