Wow! What fruit, on the nose and on the taste, ripe red and black fruits; intense, dark colour. Goes very well with grills, roasts and hearty stews.

Why we recommend this wine
When we visited Roger Sabon’s tasting room in Châteauneuf du Pape recently we were overwhelmed by the intensity of his premium wines (Parkerisation some call it; others, excessive phenolic ripeness) but this Côtes du Rhône is more balanced. It comes from the excellent 2010 vintage.

This wine
The 2010 Rhône By Roger Sabon is made from 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Cinsault. It is a dense ruby colour with pure aromas of raspberries, ripe cherries, Provençal spices and minerals. It is well-balanced with silky tannins and gobs of red and black fruit flavours – it is extremely elegant! While drinking wonderfully now, it is developing into a remarkable Côtes du Rhône, one that will cellar quite happily for a decade. And it is rated pretty highly by the critics; 89 points, Jeb Dunnuck, Rhone Report (Issue # 9 - Sep 2011); 87 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2011)

The wine estate
The Sabon family has a long history in Châteauneuf du Pape having controlled vineyards there since 1540. Roger Sabon was one of 3 brothers all of  whom established their own wineries. A real stickler for making pure, unadulterated, classic wines he established the reputation of the winery during the seventies and eighties. The estate is renowned for their four red traditionally made Châteauneuf du Pape cuvees.  It is very much a family affair with children and in-laws involved.

Domaine Roger Sabon has 15 superbly situated hectares in AOC Châteauneuf du Pape (Les Cabrières, La Crau, Courthézon and Nalys) along with 17 hectares in Roquemaure where the Côtes du Rhône is made.

Food and wine
With so much fresh fruit flavours it goes perfectly with bistro fare and with grilled meats, barbeques and charcouterie.
