Dandelion Vineyards (375ml), 2016, Lionheart of the Barossa Shiraz

Red, New World, Shiraz from South Australia

James Hallidays's Australian Wine Companion gives a 5 star rating to Dandelion Vineyards and describes the wine maker Elena Brooks as "an exceptionally gifted winemaker".

Although Dandelion's growers see the Devil in every weed, they encourage the humble Dandelion amongst the vines as "they suppress winter weeds, provide mulch in the summer, and proffer their Wishing Clocks in the spring to blow off to make our wish come true".

The Lionheart Shiraz is named after Dandelion’s lifelong champion of old Barossa vines, Carl Lindner. This wine comes from his ancient, gnarled vines, some approaching and many over a hundred years of age that not only survive but thrive on their own roots in some of the oldest soils on the planet.

The winemakers tasting notes -
Colour Intense crimson with youthful purple hues.
Nose Lifted blue fruits, Satsuma plum, macerated blackberries and Christmas pudding-like spice flow out of the glass with spicy pepper, and hints of bramble and dark cocoa.
Palate Generous mouth filling sweet blackberry, raspberry and plums cover the palate with lashings of sweet spice. Firm but fine tannins and dark chocolaty nuances continue throughout the lengthy palate with youthful finish.
