Craggy Range (375ml), 2009, «Te Muna» Martinborough

White, New World, Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand

Past wine – out of stock

The Martinborough district was selected because of its unique combination of soils and climate.  They describe the climate as“warm-cool” because it is not genuinely cool like Champagne, Central Otago or the Mosel, but is slightly warmer sharing similar degree days to Burgundy,Marlborough and the Loire Valley.  This makes it the perfect place to grow Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

Please visit our Craggy Range profile for more information on the winery.

Pale greenish straw in colour.  Rich aromatics of fresh lime juice, elderflower, lemongrass, grilled citrus and ripe nectarine.  Complex and intriguing.  The palate is concentrated and dense, yet retains remarkable linearity and focus.  Zesty citrus, stonefruit, herb and floral flavours fill the mouth, a fine chalky mineral texture tightens and focuses the finish.  The wine finishes long and powerful, crisp, clean and dry.

This is not your typical New Zealand Marlborough fruit bomb but nor is it your austere French Sancerre or Pouily Fume - it is a wine of great finesse in the middle of these two extremes.

Last tasted by us in November 2012.  The tell-tale Kiwi Sauvignon flavours are subtle but there are also the complex, refined flavours typical of an aged Loire Sauvignon that make this a wine to savour.
