Chateau le Chatelet (375ml), 2005, Saint Emilion grand cru

Red, Old World, Merlot based from Bordeaux France

Past wine - sold out

Coming from the great 2005 vintage it is everyting that one would expect from a good Saint Emilion; good fruits on the nose and palette and soft tannins.  At the price perhaps not your everyday drinking red but well worth the price for that more special occasion. Nevertheless critics view this wine as one of the best bargains of the 2005 vintage.

This small chateau (3,3 hectares) has perfect soil on the best part of the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, between Clos-Fourtet and Beauséjour-Bécot, very close of the “Grandes Murailles” (High wall) of the old town.

This Grand Cru Classé lost its rank in 1996 following family problems but it has the terroir! Julien Berjal, who took over the vineyard in 2002, aims to regain the “Grand Cru Classé” in the next classification in 2016. He has completely restructured the vineyard. The work obviously went better than hoped for because le Chatelet regained its Grand Cru Classé status in the 2012 classification.

Le Guide Hachette 2009 noted "His work has been rewarded : the 2004 vintage and the 2005 vintage both got a star. The main color is red and possesses amber reflections, the rising bouquet expresses a warm aroma made of roasty wood and ripe black berries. The palate is tender, tasty as the nose. This bottle is ready, with its silky tannins."

Lasted tasted by us in April 2013 - a sensuous aroma and there is a full mouth feel of rich red fruits. Very good.
