Tangy, full of fruit (think of lemons and limes) and some complexity; often considered to be the ideal accompaniment to oysters.

Why we recommend this wine
All too often we think of Muscadets as thin and not much of anything, but this is different, this we like.

The wine
The 25 hectare vineyard is planted exclusively with Melon de Bourgogne. More than half of the vines were planted forty years ago and one area has one hundred year old vines. The wine is fermented in stainless vats and then matured on the lees and using the technique of “batonnage” (stirring) to bring more complex flavours to the wine. It is bottled at the Château in the Spring.

The wine estate
Chéreau Carré is a family owned winemaker founded just after the WWII and like many other successful ventures has grown its vineyard holdings by acquisition and marriage. They have always placed quality over quantity and make all their wines using the ‘sur lie’ method (that is, leaving it to mature on the yeasts that die during fermentation to add complexity).

Did you know?
Melon de Bourgogne was introduced into the Nantes area by Burgundian monks early in the eighteenth century. This grape variety is not planted much in France or in other wine regions of the world however it is still found around the Abbey of Vezelay in Burgundy.
