Chateau Clauzet (375ml), 2008, Cru Bourgeois, St-Estèphe

Red, Old World, Cabernet-based from Bordeaux, France

Past wine – out of stock. Try Chateau Le Crock instead

The 2008  was awarded 3 stars by Decanter magazine.  It is described as a great classic wine, a beautiful deep red, concentrated, with rich tannins, very structured, with a nose dominated by red currant and spices, a nice wine for aging.

Baron Maurice Velge, has built Chateau Clauzet up to an area of 30 hectares of scattered vinyards adjoining some of the best vineyards of Saint-Estephe, The vines are made up of Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) with a significant proportion of Merlot (40%) and a complement of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot (5%). Jose Bueno is the wine-maker.  He previously worked for 23 years for Baron Philippe de Rothschild, where he initially worked Château Mouton Rothschild, and then assumed the responsibility of the wine of Châteaus Clerc Milon and Armaillacq . "I know the advanced techniques used in a premier grand cru classe", he says, "where even the smallest details are important. Here, my responsibility extends from the vineyard to the wine."  " Our goal", says Maurice Velge, "is to preserve the old vineyard that provides a concentrated production and gives rich wines. We control the yields to 45 hl / ha. Manual harvesting is focused on finding a perfect maturity, plot by plot. At the winery we use custom-made cement tanks for fermentation . The high quality of the crop used to make good maceration to allow the grapes to express its full potential. Half of the crop undergoes malolactic fermentation in new oak barrels.  ... To make a great wine, it must be given the means to grow as much as possible, every detail counts, from maintenance of the vines to winemaking. It is a true work of craftsmanship."

The notes on our visit to Chateau Clauzet are in Bordeaux 2011

Last tasted by us in December 2012 where we found it to be full of fruit; the tannins have softened; good acidity gives it a fresh taste.
