Château Lamartine, (375ml), 2014, Cahors

Red, Old World, Malbec blend from the South West of France

Powerful with ripe red fruits and a hint of liquorice. Obviously the ideal match for South-West France cuisine: duck confit, cassoulet, pan fried duck breast… etc

Why we recommend this wine
Malbec is the dominant grape in both Cahors and Argentina. Argentinian winemakers have obviously popularised Malbec so it is interesting to compare the two to see why and which you prefer.

The wine
This wine is a blend of Malbec (90%) and Merlot (10%) and is lightly oaked; 15% in small oak barrels and 15% in large oak barrels and the balance in cement tanks for a year. The winemaker has not tried to emulate the fruitier Argentinian style preferring the French terroir approach.
This particular wine was 94th in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines in 2014 with a score of 90/100 with the comment “There's a ripe plushness to the dried blackberry, fig and tobacco flavors that lengthen out on the spice-infused midpalate. Baker's chocolate, cream and vanilla notes power the finish.”

The wine estate
Château Lamartine has been in the same family for generations. Alain Gayraud's Grandfather, Edouard Sérougne, had a key role in the region, as he was the founder of the first union of Cahors, aiming at defending and promoting Cahors wines. Today, he makes the most of his beautiful terroir, mixing modern techniques and respect of the environment. Lamartine website

Food and wine
This wine has the fruit and tannin to cut through fatty dishes and so the match to the duck-based dishes of the South West of France. It is also great with sharp cheddars and similar cheeses. Refer also to our food and wine pairing guide, click here
