Château La Monge (375ml), 2016, Côtes de Bourg

Red, Old World, Merlot based blend from Bordeaux, France

Past wine – out of stock. See here instead

Classic Merlot dominated Bordeaux blend, good red fruits and fine tannins; ideal with steak and Comte cheese.

Why we recommend this wine
To get good Merlot at a reasonable price in Bordeaux one is forced to go outside the super stars of Pomerol and Saint Emilion. We did this deliberately a while back - see out trip notes here). This is a pretty good substitute from a great vintage.

The wine
A blend of 65 % Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 % Malbec from the Right Bank of Bordeaux.

The wine estate
Château La Monge is one of four chateau, all on the right bank, owned by Vignobles Bourdillas. Their story began several generations ago ... both their paternal and maternal ancestors were winemakers. Following the marriage of their grandparents, their vineyards amounted to over 120 hectares. Today, 4 brothers manage the vineyards and vinify their range of wines. They farm environmentally and make wines using traditional methods respecting the different grape varieties and terroirs.

Food and wine
Goes well with roasts, grilled meats and hard cheese.
