Château Frédignac (375ml), 2012, AOC Blaye - Côtes de Bordeaux rouge - Cuvée Terroir

Red, Old World, Merlot based blend from Bordeaux, France

Past wine – out of stock. See here instead

Full of ripe red fruits with soft tannins, full of freshness; a classic merlot. Ideal with lighter meats such as rack of lamb or veal and lighter hard cheeses.

Why we recommend this wine
We visited Bordeaux expressly to find reasonably priced, good quality Bordeaux and this wine certainly meets that requirement (see our visit notes here).

The wine
A blend of 80% Merlot for flexibility and fruit supplemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec to bring structure and balance. We generally feel that red wines without oak miss something but this certainly doesn’t. The Wine Enthusiast Journal awarded this 2012 90 points and the Editor's Choice accolade.

The wine estate
Chateau Frédignac has been in the hands of the L'Amouller family since 1919 when a young, visiting sailor fell in love with the land and a local lass (or was it the other way round) and bought land which had been used for vineyards since the mid-1800s.

The younger generation of Vincent and Ludivine started along the ‘nurture nature’ path in 2003 and in 2010 started the conversion to organic farming by abolishing all use of synthetic chemicals, that is, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides.

Did you know?
Malbec (of which this wine has touches) has been used as a blending grape in this part of Bordeaux for generations and it is thought that cuttings from Bordeaux were the start of Malbec in Argentina.
