Brédif Brut (375ml), NV, Sparkling Vouvray

Sparkling, Old World, Chenin Blanc Brut from Vouvray in the Loire, France

Past wine – out of stock. See here instead

It has a subtle, restrained style, with gentle apple and pear-like aromas and a little creaminess. Excellent as an aperitif with hors d’oeuvres.

Why we recommend this wine
We visited Bredif when we were in the Loire valley recently - see our notes here. We were really impressed with this sparkling chenin blanc and you know our love of Champagne.

The wine
The grapes are hand picked with care to avoid any bruising. They then undergo pneumatic pressing. Only the juice that runs naturally from the grapes is used (i.e. not pressed juice), which is left to clarify for 18 to 24 hours. Temperature controlled fermentation at 16 degrees C takes place for about a month. The wine is left to mature in vats for 9 months on lees. The sparkling wine is made from the selection of the finest wines of the year, blended with around 10% of reserve wines. The bottled sparkling wine is then aged for two and a half years before disgorgement and being made ready for sale.

The wine estate
Founded in 1893 by Mr. Brédif the Brédif House is one of the best known and most respected houses in the area. Baron Patrick de Ladoucette took over the winery in 1980.
Grown on the lower slopes along the Loire Valley in Vouvray and Vernou-sur-Brenne, the grapes for Marc Brédif’s Vouvray enjoy Northern/Southern exposure. The vineyards have soils of mainly chalk clay, with some parcels having flint clay soils. The vineyards are 25-30 years old on average

Did you know?
Chenin Blanc is not a widely grown grape but it really flourishes on the Northern bank of the Loire in Vouvray and Savennières, France and also in the Stellenbosch area of South Africa where it makes somewhat simpler wines.
