Angeline Vineyards (375ml), 2017, Cabernet Sauvignon

Red, New World, Cabernet from California

The bouquet and the first taste are intense with notes of fresh blackberry and rich currant. Medium bodied with soft tannins infused with vanilla and a subtle caramel, finishing with bright fresh fruit and a touch of earthiness. Ideal with cold meats and tomatoe-based dishes.

Why we recommend this wine
Californian Cabs are legendary and this is a wonderful, value-for-money example.

The wine
Although the North Coast has traditionally set the standard for Cabernet Sauvignon, pockets of distinction have risen throughout the coastal regions of the state from the Sonoma Valley to as far south as Monterey and Paso Robles. By integrating the diverse characteristics from each of these regions and their vineyards, they consider this approachable Cabernet represents the full potential of California to produce world-class wines.

Due to the great variation in the vineyards from which they source Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, picking typically starts while they are still busy with Pinot Noir production, and often continues through to finish of the harvest. Each lot is picked overnight and delivered to the winery in the early morning hours where it is destemmed to closed-top fermenters. Individual vineyards are evaluated for their strengths and unique facets, which ultimately determine the choices in yeast and cap management. They often press the lots before they reach total dryness in order to maximize their bright fruit qualities without over-extracting heavy tannins. Each lot is aged separately on 40% new French and American oak for 12 months before the final blend prior to bottling.

The wine estate
Angeline Vineyards is located in the Russian River Valley, Sonoma County. Founder, Courtney Benham, came from a farming background living the equal parts of rigor and reward of farming firsthand. He was struck by the endless possibilities of the grape. Early on he recognized that great wine is the sum of more than just good grapes and talented winemakers; it’s the result of an efficient, nimble whole. As with so many start-up ideas, there is a constant conceptual interplay between the lean core team and a selection of expert consultants and growers.

Angeline Vineyards is a member of the Sonoma County Winegrowers Association, and are pleased to report that they have passed their first third-party sustainability audit.

Did you know?
California’s wine history dates back to the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted the first vineyards to produce wine for Mass. During the Prohibition era it was the production of wine for Mass that kept the industry alive. If California were a separate country, it would be the world's fourth largest wine producer.
