Christmas Dinner Fine Wines

4 fine wines; champagne, burgundy, sherry and port

With such a vast array of tastes and textures including smoked salmon canapés, turkey and trimmings, Christmas pudding and Stilton, it can be hard to know which wines to select.

Get the celebrations off to a great start with a glass of Champagne. Goutorbe’s non-vintage Prestige Brut 1er Cru (see here) has been aged for some time in the bottle to give it that delicious biscuity flavour. This is grower Champagne at its finest - grower Champagnes are made by the grower of the grapes rather than sending them to be blended at one of the large Champagne Houses such as Moet et Chandon. This Champagne is perfect on its own or to complement light canapé bites.

As for the turkey and trimmings, they are much richer and need something more substantial but not overpowering.'s suggestion is Domaine Alain Michelot, Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes from the excellent 2015 vintage (see here); a typical quality red Burgundy. A lightish red with concentrated aromas and flavours of cherries.

It is the powerful flavours of all that fruit in the Christmas pudding and mince pies that requires something equally as concentrated. This wine, like liquid raisins that even raisin-haters love, Pedro Ximénez El Candado (PX) made by Valdespino (see here) fits the bill perfectly.

Finally, the Stilton makes its entry and needs a powerful wine to match its saltiness and nothing goes better than the traditional Port. have selected Quinta Do Noval’s LBV Unfiltered Single Vineyard port (see here) from the ‘declared’ 2011 vintage to accompany the Stilton. A fruity, slightly sweet, powerful port ready to drink now.
